Bra Fitting 101: What Every Woman Should Know
Share
When it comes to everyday confidence and comfort, few things make as big a difference as a well-fitting bra. And yet, more than 80% of women are wearing the wrong size. Whether you’ve never been fitted or it’s just been a while, let’s get back to basics and talk about what every woman really needs to know about bra fitting.
Why Bra Fit Matters
A good bra doesn’t just sit on your body, it supports you, lifts you, and can actually improve your posture. When you’re in the right size, your clothes fit better, your shoulders relax, and you don’t spend the day adjusting straps or tugging on your band. It’s about feeling put-together, supported, and comfortable in your own skin.
How to Measure at Home
While nothing replaces an expert fitting, you can absolutely get started on your own with two quick measurements:
- Band size: Wrap a soft tape measure snugly under your bust, right where your band sits. This number (in inches) is your starting band size.
- Bust size: Measure around the fullest part of your bust loosely. Don’t pull too tight.
Now subtract your band measurement from your bust measurement:
- 1 inch = 1 cup
- 5 inches = DD cup
-
6 inches = E cup
…and so on.
For example:
If your band measures 34" and your bust measures 42", you’re likely a 34FF.
Note: I prefer to use UK sizing due to size inclusivity
But Sizing Isn’t Everything
Here’s the truth: size is a starting point, not a rule. Every brand fits a little differently, and even within the same size, different bra styles work better for different breast tissue and body types.
That’s why trying on several styles is key. A demi-cup may work beautifully for one woman, while a full coverage or plunge is better suited for another. Sister sizing can also help you dial in a better fit.
Fit Checklist: What to Look For
Here’s how you know you’ve found the right bra:
The band sits level and fits snug like a hug
The cups fully contain the breast tissue without gaping or spilling
The center gore (middle part) lies flat against your chest
The straps stay put but don’t dig in
You feel lifted, supported, and comfortable
If it’s a no on any of these, try a different size or style.
Don’t Settle for “Good Enough”
We’ve all been there, buying whatever was on sale or sticking to the same size we’ve worn since high school. But your body changes, your needs evolve, and your bra should support you through all of it. Whether you’re postpartum, perimenopausal, post-surgery, or simply ready for a refresh, a proper fit makes all the difference.

Bra fitting doesn’t have to be complicated but it’s essential. Once you experience a perfect fit, you’ll never go back to “close enough.” You deserve to feel amazing in your own skin, every single day.
